"Let us make us a name"

As many of you know, yesterday was my 24th birthday. I appreciate the emails, cards, and all the calls. I do not know if there is anything more awkward then standing over a cake and having people sing to you. Then you blow your germs all over the cake then we all eat it. I wonder where and when this tradition started. (if you know email and let me know)

It is odd how as humans we want attention, until we get it then we want something else. This made me think of a story I read last weekend. I am reading through the Bible. I started the year reading a chapter in Genesis, Ezra, Matthew, and Acts. I am told that I will be through the Bible this year if I do that – we will see!

Well, what I was trying to get to. The people of Babel said in Gen. 11
“let us make us a name”. They were created as we are to glorify God and to build His name and fame – but they had another plan. Then the cool thing is that in the next verse Abraham – who was not concerned about his name at all – was told his name would be great. Abraham even gave the best land to his nephew lot and would not receive any reward from kings won he won a battle. Abraham simply was not worried about his name at all.

The people of Babel I am sure wanted to have a name that people would remember throughout all the generations. However, I have found many people who have never heard of the story the tower built by the people of Babel. In contrast, in almost every major religion Abraham is held with respect and many people will know of Abraham.

Okay — what am I trying to get to.

Today when you go to school, work, or wherever and you are worried and you look in the mirror or think what will people think of me — why don’t you stop a second and remember that seeking a name for yourself will not get you far.

Ask yourself what will they think of the God I serve. Trust me history proves that it is a much better way to try to live a significant life!

Quick Announcment:
I will be speaking at NGSCU in Dahlonega at the Our Generation Campus Ministry @ 5:30. If you want to come let me know.
